FCG National Tour at Redhawk
Redhawk Golf Club
Temecula, California

Spring is upon us and that means great weather and great golf, both were true this weekend. Redhawk Golf Club, which formerly held an opening stage of Q-School, winds its way in and out of the Temecula hills, leading to some stunning views and interesting golf holes. Thank you to all the players and families who came out this weekend!

Boys College Prep Division:
The Boys College Prep Division was probably the most exciting race of the weekend. In the end a 3-way playoff was needed to determine a winner. Aaron Strockis (San Diego, CA), who was in the lead after a 2-over 74 on Saturday. Strockis follwed his 74 up with a 77 on Sunday and would end up tying with Ireland and Avarello at a total of 151. Jack Ireland (Mission Viejo, CA) was only one shot off the lead after a day one 75. He kept it pretty consistent on day two, shooting a 76 for a tournament total of 151. One of the most impressive turn-arounds of the tournament goes to Jack Avarello (San Diego, CA). Jack struggled on Saturday and shot an 8-over 80, but bounced back tremendously on Sunday and fired off a 1-under 71, low round in the division and goof enough to sneak him in the playoff at a total score of 151. Avarello almost didn’t stick around long enough to see he had a spot in the playoff, but after some encouragement from his father, he decided to hang around. It certainly paid off. The playoff started on hole number 1 at Redhawk, a double dog-leg par 5. Hole 1 would be all Aaron Strockis would need to take the playoff, beating the other two and claiming first place in the division. Second and third were determined by a card-off. Avarello won second place and Ireland took third.

Girls College Prep Division:
The Girls College Prep Division was a run away from the start. Alyaa Abdulghany (Newport Beach, CA) who is only 13 and technically playing up a division shot two under par rounds of 70 and 69 (both low rounds of the tournament in any age division) to win the division by 10 shots. Sasha Banks (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) and Lauren Kirkwood (Carlsbad, CA), although 10 shots off of the lead still played very competitive and put together two solid rounds of golf. Banks would go on to shoot 74-75—149 (most likely good enough to win most other tournaments) but this time she would have to settle for second place. Kirkwood would also play very well and shoot, 74-77—151, which would land her at third place in the division.

Girls 14 & Under Division:
The Girls 14 & Under Division was an extremely tight race the entire tournament. Out of 5 participants, 4 of them shot the same score (80) on the first day. Going into day two, 3 out of the 4 players were able to card scores in the 70’s and take the top three positions in the division. Alli Kim (Murrieta, CA) shot a 1-over 73 to take first place at a tournament total of 153. Not too far behind was April Ranches (San Diego, CA), who shot a second round 74 to finish one shot off the lead at 154, but was good enough for second place. Rounding out the top three was Wave Whiston (San Diego, CA) who finished the second round with a 76, for a tournament total of 156, a third place finish.

Boys 13-14 Division:
All the way from Canada, Callum Davison (Duncan, BC) came down and took first place in the Boys 13-14 age division. Davison who actually holds the club with his hands switched, shot two excellent rounds in the 70’s. Round one was a 77 followed up by a 74 to finish with a total of 7-over, 151. FCG Tour veteran and frequent competitor, Blake Petchel (Temecula, CA), shot a pretty good round of 82 the first day, but turned it around on Sunday and finished strong with a 79 to finish the tournament at a total of 17-over 161. Kyler Atkinson (Boulder City, NV) would take third place in the division, shooting rounds of 85 and 77 to finish at 18-over 152.

Boys 11-12 Division:
Riley Klingelberg (Murrieta, CA) and Brendan Gonzalez (San Diego, CA) were going back and forth all day for the lead in the Boys 11-12 division. Coming into 18, Gonzalez had the lead, but unfortunately he would double bogey the hole and allow Klingelberg to take first place. Klingelberg finished the tournament with two rounds of 73-79—152, 8-over par. Gonzalez finished only one stroke behind, shooting 76-77—153. Guy Clauss (Newport Beach, CA) rounded out the top three finishers for this age division. Clauss shot two very consistent round of 81-80—161 to finish the tournament at 17-over par.

Boys 10 & Under Division:  The Boys 10 & Under division played just one day at Redhawk Golf Club, in line with the new FCG structure for tournaments. Another FCG tour veteran, Ryan Plodkowski (San Diego, CA), just back from his FCG Texas Championship trip, took first place at Redhawk. Plodkowski was able to hold off his competitors and shoot a 91 (19-over par) to win the division. Ryan Voois (Ladera Ranch, CA) was only a few shots behind by the end of the day. Voois carded a 24-over 96 to take second place. Brett Sawaia (Henderson, NV) finished in third place this time around; he shot a 30-over 102 to complete the top three finishers in the division.
