The Experience:
With a record number of participants, this year’s San Diego Junior Amateur was an all around exciting experience for everyone involved. Spanning two separate golf courses (Steele Canyon Golf Club & Sycuan Golf Resort) and 3 days, 392 junior golfers from all corners of the world came to compete in one of the most competitive junior events in the country. There were multiple exemptions on the line for every age division, the largest of which was the exemption to the Callaway Junior World. Both courses were in amazing condition and the weather cooperated perfectly, both of these things were reflected through the record low scores we saw in 2013.

Boys 15-18:

Boys 15-18 was the only division at Steele Canyon Golf Club, Corey Shaun (Encinitas, CA), got off to a blazing hot start firing a 66-67 the first two days to put him 9-under par through 2 days; setting a record for the low score at any San Diego Junior Amateur in the Boys 15-18 division. Shaun’s 66 in the first round also missed the tournament record at Steele Canyon by only 1 shot. Shaun continued rolling on the third day with a 72, which was good enough to secure the championship by 4 shots. Making a late run on the third day was Aaron Wise (Corona, CA) who shot a very respectable 71-69 the first two days and had an opportunity to go real low on the third day, but was derailed by two late bogeys. Even with the two bogeys, Wise ended up with another 69, which gave him a second place finish. Hunter Epson (Long Beach, CA) fired a 68 in the final round to tie for a third place finish, but was victorious in a card-off with Patrick Murphy from Canada.

Girls 15-18:
After starting with a 2-under 70, Rong Ji (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) came back to the field over the next two days, posting a 77-76 to finish the tournament. Her backwards slide allowed for Casie Cathrea (Livermoore, CA) to make a charge and take the championship. Cathrea, who is already committed to Oklahoma State to play golf, was able to improve her score all three days of the tournament posting a 74-73-70 to finish 6 shots clear of the rest of the field. Ji was able to finish in second place with a three-day total of 7-over. Coming in third place was Shannon Oh (Carlsbad, CA) who shot 74-77-78 over the three days to finish 13-over and round out the top three.

Boys 13-14:

There was never really a question who the Boys 13-14 division championship was going to be won by. Devon Bling (Ridgecrest, CA) shot a 5-under 67 both days of the tournament to end with a final score of 10-under par, beating the next competitor by 9 strokes. Sidney Cozier (San Marcos, CA) started off with a fantastic 2-under par 70 but on the second day shot a 3-over 75 and let Norman Xiong, (Canyon Lake, CA) to slide into second place after he shot a 1-under 73-70 through two-days. Cozier had to settle for a 1-over third place finish.

Girls 13-14:

After landing in 3rd place after the first day, Alyaa Abdulghady (Newport Beach, CA) had an excellent 5-under 67 on the second day to over take all other players and win the division. Alisha Lau (Richmond, BC) improved 8 strokes from the first to second day (79-71) to capture the second place trophy. Wave Whiston (San Diego, CA) finished with a very respectable 7-over two day total and took third place after winning a card-off.

Boys 11-12:

The Boys 11-12 division had the most exciting finish out of all the age divisions. The title was decided by a play-off that lasted almost until dark. In the end James Song (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) was victorious which left Edwin Kuang (Murrieta, CA) with the second place finish. Both players had finished with a two-day total of 2-under par.  Ricky Castillo (Yorba Linda, CA) missed out on the playoff by only one stroke after finished two days 1-under par (73-70).

Girls 11-12:

Kailie Vongsaga (Rancho Belago, CA) took first place in the Girls 11-12 division, she beat out the next closest competitor by 6 strokes, finishing Even par for the two days. Second in the division was Hae Ran Ryu (Korea) who finished 6-over for the tournament. There was a tie for third between Ashley Park (Arcadia, CA) and Brooke Seay (Rancho Santa Fe, CA). Both golfers finished at 8-over par, but Seay won the card-off with a final round 77.

Boys: 9-10:

The top three finishers in the Boys 9-10 division were all within three shots of each other throughout both days of the tournament, making for an exciting experience. In the end Jeevan Sihota (Victoria, BC) came away with the victory with a two-day total of 2-over. Sihota fired a 1-under final round to secure the first place position. Second place went to Sebastian Igbal (San Jose, CA) and third place to Robert You (Nashua, NH).

Girls 9-10:

Another record was set in the Girls 9-10 division, this time by Karah Sanford (San Diego, CA). Her final score of 11-under par sets a new record for low score in the division. The most impressive round was her 7-under first round on Pine Glen and Sycuan Golf Resort. The next closest competitor was Angelina Kim (Los Angeles, CA), who finished 5-over par after two days. Meaning Sanford won the division by an astounding 16 shots. Rounding out the top three in this division was Brianna Navarrosa (San Diego, CA), who shot a two day total of 8-over and won a card-off with a final day 60, beating fellow competitor Brianna Park.

Boys 8 & Under:

The Boys 8 & Under division is all about the fun! Ken Shibata (Japan), Ian Fritz (Las Vegas, NV) and Connor Williams (Escondido, CA) were the top three finishers in this division. The top three finished 10-over, 11-over, and 13-over respectively. Very impressive scores for two days of golf.

Girls 8 & Under:

Another division that is all about the fun! Karen Tsuru (Carlsbad, CA), Faith Low (Foster City, CA) and Isabella Ranches (San Diego, CA) were the top three finishers in the Girls 8 & Under division. They finished 18-over, 23-over and 27-over respectively. These golfers obviously have a lot of talent and a great road ahead of them in golf!
